Exploring the artificial moons that orbit our planet

Introduction to Satellites

A satellite is an object that has been intentionally placed into orbit. These objects are called artificial satellites to distinguish them from natural satellites such as Earth's Moon.

Satellite in space

The first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Since then, thousands of satellites have been launched into orbit around Earth.

How Satellites Work

Satellites operate by balancing two forces:

When these forces are balanced, the satellite falls around Earth rather than into it, maintaining a stable orbit.

Types of Satellites

Communication Satellites

Used for television, telephone, radio, internet, and military communications. Geostationary orbit (35,786 km above Earth).

Navigation Satellites

Enable GPS systems. Medium Earth orbit (20,000 km). Examples: GPS (USA), GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (EU).

Weather Satellites

Monitor Earth's weather and climate. Polar orbit or geostationary. Examples: GOES, Meteosat.

Earth Observation Satellites

For environmental monitoring, agriculture, mapping. Low Earth orbit (160-2,000 km). Examples: Landsat, Sentinel.

Scientific Satellites

For space research (astronomy, physics, etc.). Various orbits. Examples: Hubble Space Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope.

Military Satellites

For reconnaissance, early warning, communications. Various classified orbits.
